Craps can be a confusing game, depending on the bets you are placing at the moment. An understanding of the basics of the game and how to make a pass line bet will get you started on your way. There are about 40 different bets you can make on a craps layout but most of them have horrifying odds that you should keep away from.

In this table based game one of the players (the “shooter” or the “roller”) rolls the dice and the other players bet on the numbers that come or don’t come up. Before the first roll, players place their bets, which are known as: pass line and don’t pass line bets. Result of these bets depends on what the “come out roll” will be. After everybody has placed their initial bets, the roller makes his first roll (“come out roll”).

The basic bets explained:

Pass Line - You win your pass line bet if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the come out roll, and lose on a roll of 2, 3, or 12. If the roller shoots any other number, that number becomes the point number. After this, the pass line bets are winners if the rollers future rolls produce the point before 7, and losers if the opposite happens.

Don't Pass Line – are pretty much the opposite of a Pass Line bet. You win these bets if the roller shoots a 2 or 3, and loose if the roll is 7 or 11. However, if the roll is 12, the bet becomes a "push" and the player gets his chips returned. If any other number than 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 come out, it turns in to the point. Don't Pass Line bets are winners if the roller shoots a 7 before rolling the point, and losers if the opposite happens. It is essential to understand that Don't Pass Line bets can be removed or reduced before the shooter is rolling for the second time.

Come and Don't Come Bets are nearly the same as Pass and Don’t Pass Line bets. The difference is that the players place Come Bets after the point has been established by a come out roll. If the player won’t win instantly by 7 or 11, or lose by 2, 3 or 12, then the rolled number becomes the “come point”. The game is now continued the same way as with the pass line bets, but they are now called “come bets”.

Odds Bet - Once the point is established the player can make an additional bet behind the pass line bet. This is known as the "Odds Bet." It is the only bet in the casino that does not have a house edge as it is paid off with real odds:

If the point is 4 or 10 it pays 2 to 1. If the point is 5 or 9 it pays 3 to 2. If the point is 6 or 8 it pays 6 to 5.
